Stones Throw Records’ resident weedhead and beat junkie Madlib has teamed up with Indiana bluntmaster Freddie Gibbs to record what may be the stoniest EP of all time. Today saw the release of the music video for ‘Thuggin’ in which Gibbs robs a house, buys guns, and is just generally a boss. A full length collaborative album between Madlib and Gibbs is due out later this year but for now you can download the full tape for free here.
So I’m posting about Twilight… I apologize in advance on behalf of the subject matter. But if you take the time to read this insanely in-depth review of Twilight: Breaking Dawn (and the entire debacle that is the Twilight Saga), you will be rewarded by a deeper understanding of why Stephanie Meyer’s writing sucks, put forth in the most intelligent, well written article I have read in a really long time. Also, the writer writes as the Incredible HULK. Dont let that deter you. It’s seriously well-informed and a fantastic piece of journalism if you can get past the fact that its written in broken english and in ALL CAPS. The article examines not only the movie itself but also the greed of the movie studios that let these movies be made the way they are and the twisted image of love and affection the books are giving its young readers. Read it here and get pissed off.
Hulk’s summary of the article’s contents:
- “HULK READS THE TWILIGHT BOOKS AND SEES A PERSON WHO SEES THE WORLD THROUGH A SKEWED AND DEEPLY CONFLICTED PERSPECTIVE. SOME OF WHICH SEEM SO GLOWINGLY OBVIOUS AND SO CENTRAL TO SO MANY AMERICAN ISSUES BOTH IN TERMS OF YOUTH, SEXUALITY, REPRESSION, AND RELIGION. AND THE BOOKS MANAGE TO UNCONSCIOUSLY TAP INTO THOSE ISSUES WITH SUCH INCREDIBLE RESONANCE THAT IT COMES TO EMBODY THOSE ISSUES.”
And check out FILM CRIT HULK’s blog here for more top quality writing that is, nonetheless, all caps.
As the godfathers of the new internet micro-genre of “Witch House”, SALEM makes some of the most dark, brutal, and distinctive music I have heard in a long time. Their sound is equal parts Chicago footwork, industrial, hip hop, goth and even R&B. The three members who make up SALEM live across the Midwest, collaborating only through email. Together, John Holland, Jack Donoghue, and Heather Marlatt combine the blown out boom bap production of John and Jack, ethereal singing by Heather and the chopped and screwed rapping from Jack.
While not the most accomplished lyricist, Donoghue has a compelling slowed down, pitched down, demon voiced rap. Its the type of murder music that Tyler, The Creator would make if he was speedballing and listening to Nine Inch Nails. Listen for yourself and tell me that SALEM is not the best soundtrack to your winter ketamine trips.
In addition to making their own original music, SALEM also produce the most awesome remixes of everyone from British goth-pop artist Charli XCX…
… to motherfuckin Gucci Mane.
Show SALEM some love and buy their album King Night. It does not disappoint. Also, check out their website for more videos and some of their fucking SICK mixtapes. Jack’s twitter is also boss. Follow him or die.
So the folks over at Mishka decided to make a dope music video for my favorite song off Mr Mothafuckin eXquire’s new album Lost in Translation. I’m hyped. The verses from Danny Brown (who’s reppin a sick Duck Sauce shirt), Viktor Vasquez and Himanshu Suri of Das Racist (who’s new album is the fucking TRUTH), and El-P (who looks… kinda hefty) all fucking kill it. Check the original song and its accompanying video below.
Make sure to cop Mr. Motherfuckin eXquire’s album for free here, courtesy of Mishka.
Although his name references “The Treasure State”, producer Young Montana? is from Coventry, UK though from his music you might be led to believe he comes from the Flying Lotus headed Los Angeles low end scene.
Motherfucker be crazy.
Radio Soulwax is the ambitious new project of the Dewaele brothers, the masterminds behind Soulwax and DJ duo, 2manydjs. It is designed to be a 24 hour “radio station” that combines the awesome visual elements of the 2manydjs live show with 24, hour-long audio mixes that incorporate all types of music from blues to punk to classic rock to disco. Starting July 4th, each week a new hour of the audio/visual mix will be released and added to the continuous stream on the site. The first hour, called ‘Introversy’, is a mix of the Dewaele’s favorite song intros. 420 of them. Sound weird? It is. But somehow it works. Check it out for yourself at their site or download the free app for your phone.
To get an idea of what to expect, check out some footage of 2manydjs live show…
They pretty much melt faces live. See them. And tune in to the official debut of Radio Soulwax on July 4th.

With samples of Link Wray (badass 50s rock what up), Black Flag, and the Beastie Boys and instrumentals that sound like someone slamming a macbook against your head, this could only be Death Grips. To be honest, I couldn’t stand this album when I first heard it, and at first glance it doesn’t seem like theres much to it besides loud abrasive beats and the intense screams of the vocalist. But upon revisiting it, I found the Exmilitary album is nothing short of a sonic assault. It wants to make you uncomfortable. It wants your ears to bleed. Exmilitary is an album about pain, anger, greed, and suffering and it wants to drive all those emotions home through the sheer size and power of its sound. It is not an album to be played quietly. Turn it up.
