Romain Gavras – “Notre Jour Viendra”

So Romain’s name might sound familiar because, well, you should already know it. He’s a 27 year-old French director whose goal is “to rule the world.” Romain is also co-founder of a 136-member art and filmmaking company based in Paris called, Kourtrajmé. He incorporates hip hop and graffiti sensibilities into stylish music videos and socially conscious documentaries. He’s directed music videos for Simian Mobile Disco’s – I Believe, DJ Mehdi’s –Signatune, Justice’s – Stress, and M.I.A.’s – Born Free. Romain likes to shoot things in very controversial, violent and graphic ways – he denies a lot of the things he does (very much like Hitchcock and his techniques in his film, Rope). He directed the documentary, A Cross the Universe (on Justice). Most recently, he directed his first feature film called, Notre Jour Viendra (translated – Our Day Will Come), starring Vincent Cassel (Ocean’s Twelve/Thirteen) and Olivier Barthelemy. While the trailer gives us barely any information about the actual film, it does gives us his signature style of sex and violence, a long monotoned siren, and a short throat-fingering. The most recent synopsis for the film poses this question,

“What do you do when you’re a red-haired teenage loser with no friends except for an older guy, your shrink? When everyone hates you, especially your family? When all your peers make fun of you and kick you around? The answer: you and your loser buddy blow all the cash you can get your hands on to buy a sportscar, you dress smart and you head for the land of redheads, Ireland. But what starts off as a search for an ideal, gradually escalates into a rampage of hate, violence and self-destruction.“

The film comes out, September 15th 2010 — however, only in France. They are still looking for distributors to bring it to the states.
